about
Once upon a time Ottawa had the Ottawa Folklore Centre, a fabulous people-oriented business founded by Arthur McGregor. For a couple of years they put on an annual Christmas benefit for charity featuring local artists and at least a couple of incarnations of my early band Wickentree played at them.
I don't have any photos from this gig. I don't even have a Christmas-y photo, or many photos at all from this time, or even one featuring the whole line-up for this particular gig (missing here is Jon Goodman).
The song is an old traditional French song that we got from a band called Malicorne. We tacked on one of the innumerable traditional French tunes called Gavotte to give the song a bit of a lift at the end.
lyrics
refrain:
la jambe me fait mal, boute selle, boute selle
la jambe me fait mal, boute a selle à mon cheval
tous les bergers, étant sur la montagne
tous les bergers, on vu un messager
qui leur a dit, mettez-vous en campagne
qui leur a dit, Nöel est arrivée
refrain
refrain

You can't go wrong with an Ange Hardy album and the latest is no exception. She has a voice that is purely sublime with material that speaks to the common man and woman. Charles de Lint
I just love the interplay of Keane and Delaney's instruments as they play through the invigorating set of tunes on this album. I've been hitting replay every time I play it. Charles de Lint
